Just five kilometres from Motu: Whinray Scenic Reserve is 430 hectares of virgin podocarp native forest that has been protected since 1905. The pathways take you through majestic kahikatea, rimu, totara, and matai. There are spectacular waterfalls on the Motu River that runs through the reserve. The Whinray Ecological Charitable Trust is working here to restore the North Island brown kiwi population (as well as other species such as whio, riflemen and long-tailed bats).
