One of the most popular and accessible reserves in the region, Gray’s Bush Reserve is about 10 minutes drive from Gisborne. Here you can walk through a remnant stand of tall kahikatea, which once covered the entire Gisborne plains. Some of the taller trees are thought to be 400-500 years old.  There are also puriri, pukatea, mahoe and tawa, with some kohekohe and matai. The understorey is rich with nikau and kawakawa. You can do a quick 15-20 minute loop which is wheelchair-accessible, or do a full circuit of 40-60 minutes
