About Motu Trails

The Motu Trails are a diverse set of trails in the incredible outdoor playgrounds of Eastern Bay of Plenty and Tairawhiti – and they hold something for all ages and abilities.

If you’re after an easy rolling ride through sand dunes with views of the ocean and islands, and plenty of places to swim or picnic on a wide-open beach, you’ll love the 9-kilometre Dunes Trail. If you’re keen on a quiet historic road climbing through forested, rugged high country to the remote villages of Motu and Matawai, you’ll be rewarded on the 67-kilometre Motu Road. If you’re an advanced biker, you’ll savour the single-track wilderness of the 20-kilometre historic Pakihi Track, winding downhill through dense rimu and nikau-rich forest, mossy side streams, gushing waterfalls and along the Pakihi stream. And if you’re seeking an on-road journey through high-country farmland, forests and vineyards, you’ll love Tairāwhiti’s gorgeous Heartland Ride, the Rere Falls Trail.

The trails can be linked together into an epic multi day loop or out-and-back, or you can experience them separately in half-days or full-days according to ability and preference.
